Winemaker: Karl Koester
For Karl Koester, winemaking started out as a hobby. Until 1999, he owned his own contracting company and had an educational background in physics and chemistry. Making the switch from contractor to winery owner and winemaker wasn’t a difficult transition for Karl. Having owned his own company, he was familiar with the skills required for running a business, organizing projects, and building structures.
Karl began making beer and fruit wines nineteen years ago and has experienced a lot of trial and errors and steadily learned the craft of winemaking and vineyard management. He continually worked on bettering his winemaking through books, college courses, and advice from others.
In 2004, Karl and his dad, Don bought 63 acres in Manson where the tasting room is located, and 10 acres on Howard Flats where the production facility resides. Taking down apple trees, names, and planting grapes the first year, he continued to add acreage for the next 5 years and has planted twenty varietals to date as well as built the winery and tasting rooms with the help of his crew and friends. Four Lakes Winery currently has 30 acres of wine grapes in production, planted over it’s two vineyard sites in Chelan and Manson. Karl is very proud of the fact that Four Lakes Winery is 100% estate as well as in house and hands on with the winemaking process. From growing and picking the grapes by hand, cellaring, bottling and labeling he loves the fact that he can ensure a top quality product throughout the entire production process.
Now a successful winemaker at Four Lakes Winery, Karl looks back at his first attempts at making his own wine and finds joy in the fact that he decided to turn his hobby into a career. Karl has now been making wine for nineteen years and professionally for fourteen. Starting with his 2004 vintage, Karl built and opened the tasting room in 2009 and has been generating recognition and won 74 medals so far for his successful winemaking work. Four Lakes Winery has found a niche with its big bold red wines and light crisp white wines that Karl consistently makes.
